We had fantastic weather and an exceptional turnout of 47 riders (BIG thank you to Darolyn)  and a few folks who just stopped by to visit. Mo&#8217;s BBQ lunch was tasty and the the event was voted a &#8220;must do again&#8221;. 		<description><![CDATA[February’ s Greater Houston Horse Council meeting speaker is Beth Dutson, from Deep Meadow Equine wellness Center.  http://dmesi.com/Default.htm Beth Dutson, has been working professionally with horses since 1961, campaigning Quarter Horses and Arabians in the show ring nationwide and managing Arabian and Quarter Horse breeding farms.  She studied Animal Husbandry at LSU in 1960 &#8211; 62 and was fortunate enough to participate in the graduate study on feeding and conditioning done during that time.  She has since taken continuing education courses from Texas A&#38;M, North Carolina State University and Tomball Community College.  She has read books by, interviewed, visited with and attended clinics given by specialists in the equine sports therapy field (Mimi Porter, KESMARC &#8211; Kentucky Equine Sports Medicine Research Center; Dr. Bryan McLaren, Photonic Torch; Linda Tellington-Jones, T-Touch; Pattie Roberts, Equine Water Treadmill; etc. to name a few).  For 10 years she performed rehab treatments for a leading racehorse owner. 		<description><![CDATA[Burros in Big Bend State Park—a Dissenting View By Pauline Singleton, GHHC Director Burros are cute—there is no doubt about it. Their widespread appeal is understandable. Nevertheless, their place in not running wild on our public lands. Our state parks should not be used to support herds of feral burros. In particular, the Big Bend area is too arid—too fragile&#8211;to bear this burden. Many (and I am one of them) feel that state and national parks should be refuges for our native flora and fauna. If the burro population reaches a certain point, populations of some other species will almost certainly decline. Burros are not unique in that regard. Let white-tailed deer become too numerous, and songbird species go into decline. The white-tailed deer is a native species, of course, but we have removed the predators that keep its population in check.
